I had been out fishing maybe 3 times in 20 years, with guides out of Victoria and Haida Gwaii. So I would be considered little more than a beginner on the fishing front, but also enjoy being out on the water and seeing what there is to see.

I have a tendency to be risk averse, so Gerald's confidence in operating the boat actually made me fairly comfortable in leaving Telegraph Cove in the dark and the fog of an August early morning.

Our schedule took us over to local islands to trawl for salmon, before anchoring in another spot in the mist for halibut. Gerald accommodated my skill level with the parts of the catch I was able to take on, and he handled all the rest. I was able to come home with my quota of spring and halibut, and had a thoroughly enjoyable time away from it all and immersed in the experience.

Gerald is very kind and communicative. He is calm and an expert at what he does. We had a wonderful time and I can't wait to book again next year.

We had to reschedule our initial day due to bad weather, dang storms! Gerald was very accomodating and we went out a couple of days later. Winds were strong but the captain made sure that we were always fishing with the winds and not against them. we caught absolutely gorgeous coho and a huge spring and a sea bass! When the fishing slowed down, the captain changed gear, reeled up and every time we'd have a fish on!

Spent an awesome late afternoon and early evening on the water with Gerald.

During the cruise, we saw a number of humpback whales and some Dall's porpoises, while enjoying the beautiful scenery of the coast around Telegraph Cove.

Later, we cruised the tide rips and pulled in some pink salmon, which was exciting for a novice and gave us something to bring home too!

We spent 3.5 hours fishing with the very knowledgeable Captain Gerald. As we boarded he made it clear we should be able to catch fish! This was no boast, we had 20 coho salmon in 3 hrs fishing, almost non stop action with only 2 people fishing. In addition the Captain is good company and creates a relaxed atmosphere on his boat. I will book this trip again as soon as I return to Nanaimo despite losing this round of the Canada cup.
